Palawan is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, and it is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of jurisdiction. The islands of Palawan stretch from Mindoro in the northeast to Borneo in the southwest. It lies between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island, measuring 450 kilometres (280 mi) long, and 50 kilometres (31 mi) wide.
National Geographic named Palawan as one of its top-20 destinations for 2011. It has 17 Key Biodiversity Areas and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are at risk from mining. Palawan is not just an island in the Philippines; it is one of the world’s last frontiers. Rich in biodiversity it is home to some of the rare and endangered species both fauna and flora. Palawan is our last frontier, our last hope.
Mining in Palawan has already ravaged forests, generated flooding and caused the siltation of rivers and farmland. It has also destroyed sacred sites.
Palawan has been on our to-go lists for a long time with destinations such as Busuanga, El Nido, Coron and Puerto Princesa among others. Every seat sale, Sheena has been begging me to book for any destination in Palawan, but luck is not always on our side. We may not have a chance to go anytime soon due to time and budget constraints, but we should and we will visit Palawan.
Paawan does not need mining to survive. It can stand on its own with its biodiversity.
